Which side of the body do strokes affect the most? How do you know?

Question by sylvia s: Which side of the body do strokes affect the most? How do you know?
This question comes as I been watching my Dad who is in a nursing home after he had a stroke on his left side of body over 5 years ago. I been told that strokes normally affect only the right side but why is the left in my father’s predictament? I mean I don’t fully understand how it occurs. All the research I done confuses me. Can anyone who truly knows their medical terminology help and better explain? Thanks

I’m no doctor, but my common sense tells me the left side would be more common because the heart is on that side. And usually when something goes wrong there, the left arm seems to go numb

strokes are caused by an intracranial hemorrhage which is when the brain has bled, or by an intracranial infarction which is a blockage of blood in the brain. these can affect either side of the brain. sorry about your dad. hope this helps your confusion.xxx

I am a multiple stroke survivor, I have had both of the 2 types of stroke. A clot to the brain and a bleed to the brain. Both of my strokes hit the right side of my brain and the affects are on the left side of my body for the most part. Some thinking skills and stress levels were also affected, which is my understanding with almost any stroke no matter what side of the brain it is on. I have many internet stroke friends too who had a right sided stroke which affects are seen on the left side. Your dad can join us in a line dance that goes nowhere! but in a circle lol
