Is it possible to have a stroke if you are only 30 years old?

Question by Paradox: Is it possible to have a stroke if you are only 30 years old?
I have been under tremendous stress lately. I’m really not sure about stroke symptoms, but stroke does run in my family and I am on birth control pills which I’ve heard put you at risk as well. Whenever I’m stressed I feel pain and pressure running up my neck. I would like to get stroke screening done just for peace of mind, but do they only do this for the elderly?

If your otherwise healthy, it is almost impossible. It is very unlikely to have a HA/stroke before 40, especailly if your a woman.

Yes, they can do it for anyone. Particularly, if you have a family history and/or an underlying medical condition they will of course screen you for your risks associated with it. Likewise, insurance should cover it with a doctor’s consent.

you should get it checked. i had a friend that had a stroke when she was 13…its not too common, but not impossible. there are 2 kinds…one comes from a blood clot and the other just comes from having too much pressure in your circulatory system (high blood pressure) you should get all that checked and let your doctor know about the pain and see what they say. im only 25 and im not allowed to be on birth control because i am at high risk for blood clots. dont ever dismiss something because you think you are too young to have it.

It is possible to have a stroke at any age. It is not something that happens only to the elderly. My brother had a massive stroke at age 40 and lived through it. I went with him to several stroke support group meetings and was shocked to find a great many of the people there had their strokes in their 30’s and 40’s. There was a young woman there, I think she was 28, that had a stroke. Until my brother’s stroke, I was under the mistaken impression that young people did not have strokes. That is not the case. You only hear more about the strokes in elderly people because they are more likely to be fatal.

I’m not sure if you would be at risk being 30yo. I’m 40 and I do find that when I’m stressed I also get chest pains and pain that radiates up the right side of my neck accompanied by headaches. I have heart disease in my family and do get annual physicals with bloodwork. If you need a piece of mind I would suggest an appointment with your internist.

yes it is possible just remember FAST

“F-ace… their face drooping to one side.
A-rms…can they raise their arms and keep them there.
    S-peech… is their speech slurred.
T-ime… if all of the above its time to ring an ambulance.

stroke can spread though the brain like a fire thats undetected. the sooner you call for help the more of that person you save”

i heard that on the radio today so i thought id pretty much rewrite it word for word. if you want a scan talk to your doc, he will let you have one if he thinks you need one.

Yes….100% yes. Had a friend die two years ago from a stroke. She was 32. I’m not positive about her medical history….but yes. You can have a stroke at that age. I’ve said it before….ALWAYS get checked out when something doesn’t seem right.

First of all, people of all ages have strokes. I had three between the ages of 17 and 19 and I know of many who had strokes before they were even born! If you are worried I’m sure your doctor could look into it, but it sounds more like you have a neck problem then a stroke problem. When I get stressed, the muscles in my neck tighten up and this sounds like what may be happening to you. Talk to your doctor about it and see if you can get a prescription for physical therapy. :0)
