Is it normal to not remember your entire family after a stroke?

Question by Elizabeth S: Is it normal to not remember your entire family after a stroke?
My mom who’s 52 had a stroke while she slept last night. This morning she was talking nonsense and was taken to the hospital where she doesnt know who her husband or any of her kids are. She doesnt even know who she is. Is this normal? Does memory come back? I can’t talk to her dr’s because, well I’m kind of disowned and I only know what random texts people send me about the situation.

Yes, this is very common. A stoke is a vascular ischemia in the brain which deprives the brain of blood and oxygen. This can cause temporary, or even perm., brain damage. I hope she gets better.

That is a primary symptom of stroke — memory loss.

The Good News is that it is usually temporary. and she SHOULD be OK in 3-4 weeks.

But in some case the memory loss IS permanent. Only time will tell.

yes thats totally common..sometimes the memory comes back and sometimes it don’t… my grandpa had a stroke a few years ago and he has his days where he can remember stuff and days where he still thinks he really young…he still has not fully recovered and has had many since that one…it sounds serious and she may never be the same..

some strokes are minor but some can get it to where they have to learn to walk all over really just depends on how bad the stroke was..but its totally normal for her to not remember and it will take time but she will remember again and then it will just be to where she has bad days..

Is normal,I got experience with my grandmother. Depend how big was her stroke, she will take time for be normal. My grandmother in the initial she forgot us,slowly she started remember us. She forgot write and read, later was like 10 years old girl in the way of writing and reading.Be careful because later she can broke important paper, documents or money,so put everything with lock. Keep eye in her because may be she will go in the store and don’t come back because she forgot. She is a little girl, and she is learning again, but she will learn. Another thing may be she got the stroke because the high blood pression ,I know a secret with the lemon juice. If you know ,she got high blood pression give the juice of the lemon, fruit no bottle, with not water or sugar. Help a lot , because go down the blood pression.
And for last one keep talking and show to her picture. My best for you, your mother and family.Only pacience.

Unfortunately it is normal. Her memory could come back tomorrow, but it also might never come back. Strokes can completely wipe all memory and even something as simple as motor functions are gone. I think in most cases you just have to work with the person who had the stroke and help them remember. Do understand that you may be introducing yourself every time you walk in the room. I’m sorry this happened but I must say…it’s not fair that her own daughter can’t speak with the doctors?
