Question by Jim: how can you tell the difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke motor?
i have a 200cc 4wheeler and i need to know how to tell if it is a 2stroke or a 4stroke, and my brother has a 1982 Honda motorcycle that we need the same thing we don’t know if it is 2 or 4 stroke and we don’t want to mess them up.
I know you have to add 2cycle engine oil if its a 2 stroke i just need to know if the motor is a 2 or 4 stroke i dont want to add the oil if i dont have to. i dont want to mess up the motor.

you can tell by the sound… the 2 stroke has a high pitch winy sound, and the 4 stroke has a deep thumping sound

What do you think? Answer below!

a two stroke motor requires that you mix the gas and oil together while a 4 stroke motor will have a separate location on the motor to add motor oil….and use pure gasoline in the gas tank.

The 2 stroke will have a fill tank for 2 stroke oil and the 4 stroke won’t.

if you have to mix the gas its 2 stroke( unless it has a separate oil injector)
if the exhaust pipe has a big bulge in it its a 2 stroke

basically if it was 2stroke you would know it, because you would be adding 2 stroke oil every time you gas up

if ur 200cc quad is a blaster yamaha then, yes its two stroke. You can tell by the pipes is fatter than a four stroke, and the two strokes smoke a lil and take mixin oil. Also the end of the exhaust most if the time is really small than a four stroke. hope this helps If u could give us a lil more details on the bike and quad i could tell u what they are by just the description.

The 2 strokes have an expansion chamber in exhaust.

Also, try looking up the model numbers in Google.

all those answer are lame!! if you know the difference between 2/4 stroke motor, a four stroke motor has a valve train, there are are no mechanical valves on a two stroke, so a motor that has no visible valves would be a two stroke, the easiest way is to look at the head, no valves…two stroke!!!!

    First, by the sound.

Visually, by where in intake manifold enters.
On a 4 stroke, it’ll go into the cylinder head, as the intake valves are there.

On a 2 stroke, it’ll go into the cylinder. The head’s just a cover to stop up the hole at the top of the cylinder.

2 stroke motors sound like a buzzing noise and 4 strokes have a more lower tone to them. and if its 2 stroke it will have a fat head pipe and the 4 strokes just have normal exhaust. if the motorcycle is a road bike and not a dirt bike its probably 4 stroke but if its a dirtbike them it might be a 2 stroke
