Does the Harley Twin Cam 96 have a better or worse bore/stroke ratio than the TC88?

Question by Nik M: Does the Harley Twin Cam 96 have a better or worse bore/stroke ratio than the TC88?
I’m guessing that it doesn’t because of the increased stroke and shorter rods. I read that because of the government regulations they are now programming the fuel injection to run lean, making it run hotter. I’m wondering because I’m planning to buy one soon and I want to make a good decision. I’d rather have a used bike if the engine configuration is better.

It is a little better. If you don’t want to run lean then get a power commander and adjust the fuel air mixture

the flywheel stroke is longer but the rod length is the same as the TC88 the other difference is rods are set deeper into the pistons to make up the difference.

Personally I like the 96 better because it’s a LOT cheaper to take the motor up to 103. it’s just a big bore kit versus splitting the cases to install a new set of flywheels.

The 96 will still run hot after readjustment of mix… we have done a bunch w/ PC and ThunderMax (which we prefer) and they still run hotter than the 88’s. And it’s a stroker which can vibrate more (if its a B). The plus of the 96 is the six speed trans. HP in the 96 is embarassingly close to the 88. My personal bike is an ’06 carbed 88 and I have occasion to often ride an ’07 screaming eagle 110 (thundermax ecu). Not a real fair comparison… except when I find myself prefering the carbed 88. That 110 performs… but it puts off some HEAT and we have two oil coolers on it. Tough call.

I had 88″, 95′ and now a 96″ FLHX. I never had any oil coolers on any of them. It was 95 degrees here today and I was on that 96″ the biggest part of the day, I didn’t have any problems with heat
