Can a stroke put you in a vegetative state?

Question by : Can a stroke put you in a vegetative state?
I’m writing a story and need a little help. A side character is a farmer and suffers a hemorrhagic stroke due to an arteriovenous malformation in his brain. Living in a rural area, it takes a while before he can get the proper treatment. He slips into a coma and finally wakes after a couple of weeks, but is in a vegetative state.

So is it actually possible for somebody to awake from a coma in a vegetative state after having a stroke? Is it common? Or is it just unbelievable altogether?

most people who have strokes end up like paralised down one half of their body. So no its really not uncommon for stroke victoms to end up in a vegative state.

Yes. people have all kinds of different reactions to bleeding in the brain. You DO know that a stroke is a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, yes? It is usually caused by a combination of a weak point in a blood vessel with high blood pressure. Sometimes, with an MRI or PET scan, it can be detected before it happens because the blood vessel forms an aneurism, which is a bulging point in what would otherwise be a smooth tube. Many people suffer only in half the body, because the brain is affected only on one side. My mother was an extreme case. She died almost instantly from a brain hemorrhage, in her kitchen while baking bread… She just sat down on the floor, leaned up against the refrigerator, and died… It is likely she never knew what was happening. I hope not, anyway…

My dad had a stroke once and he was totally out of it for about three days. Nothing worked, nothing moved, but I think he was “in there” – and then kind of all at once, he started coming out of it, and fortunately came back to about 90% of normal activity. It was pretty miraculous. One day I left him he was helpless, came back three days later and he was walking the hall with the nurse. So it goes to show about anything can happen.
